Rooster plot

A bestselling author decides to move to the university where his daughter teaches. Their relationship is complicated and strained, but he tries to support her after her husband leaves her for a student. Despite his own personal turmoil, he is persuaded by the dean to take on a role on campus. He befriends students, attends frat parties, and grapples with his image as "Rooster"—the tough, sexually active protagonist from his own books.

De tiendelige romcomedy Rooster werd mede gecreëerd door Bill Lawrence (Shrinking, Ted Lasso). In zijn comedy's vervullen stuntelige, zoekende maar vriendelijke mannen op leeftijd vaak een hoofdrol. Zo ook in Rooster, waar pulpschrijver Greg Russo (Steve Carell - The Four Seasons, The Morning Show) writer in residence wordt op het fictieve Ludlow College. Niet geheel toevallig ook de plek waar zijn dochter werkt. Bekende thema's passeren de revue: de waarde van familie, romantiek, verlies, spijt, zelfvertrouwen en ouder worden. Rooster is sfeervol, luchtig, blijft aan de oppervlakte (Amerikaans hè), en de humor is vooral hit & miss. De paar slapstick-achtige scenes zijn een aardige toevoeging maar de wokegrappen liggen dan weer erg voor de hand. Rooster mist diepgang (het leven gáát toch ergens over?) en kleurt netjes binnen alle lijntjes. Is daarmee alles verteld? Nee. Een positief punt aan Rooster is dat Steve Carell van Greg een positieve, optimistische boomer maakt. Mannen en vrouwen van deze generatie zijn nogal eens - niet alleen in series en films - cynisch, onbeleefd (voordringen bij de kassa), zuur en bitchy. En milieubewusteloos altijd op vakantie. Maar niet in Rooster! Brave feelgood, met een plusje.

The ten-part rom-comedy Rooster was co-created by Bill Lawrence (Shrinking, Ted Lasso). In his comedies, bumbling, searching, but friendly older men often play a leading role. This is also the case in Rooster, where pulp writer Greg Russo (Steve Carell - The Four Seasons, The Morning Show) becomes writer in residence at the fictional Ludlow College. Not entirely coincidentally, this is also the place where his daughter works.

Familiar themes make an appearance: the value of family, romance, loss, regret, self-confidence, and aging. Rooster is atmospheric, lighthearted, stays on the surface (American, you know), and the humor is mostly hit and miss. The few slapstick-like scenes are a nice addition, but the woke jokes are very predictable. Rooster lacks depth (surely life *is* about something?) and plays it safe.

Is that all there is to say? No. A positive point about Rooster is that Steve Carell makes Greg a positive, optimistic boomer. Men and women of this generation are quite often—not just in series and films—cynical, rude (cutting in line at the checkout), sour, and bitchy. And always on vacation, completely lacking in environmental awareness. But not in Rooster! A wholesome feel-good movie, with a little extra.
