Raising Hope plot

James is the only child of Virginia and Burt Chance. They had James at a very young age and raised him completely independently. Meanwhile, James has turned 23 and works with his father. Together they maintain several gardens in the neighborhood. One day, James is on his way to the night shop. Suddenly he sees a girl sprinting out of a garden, chased by an angry young man. He saves her from the man and a night of passionate sex follows. But the next day it turns out that Lucy is a wanted felon and that there is a price on her head. She is extradited to the police and ends up in jail. 8 months later, Lucy invites James to prison and it turns out she's pregnant with their child. She has also been sentenced to death and when it is carried out, James is the sole guardian of their daughter Hope. Together with his mother, father and great-grandmother Maw Maw, James learns what it is like to raise a child and what he has to take into account.
