Het Eiland plot

Frankie Loosveld, Guido Pallemans and Michel Drets have been working on the same island for years in the Cynalco Medics company. One day that constant is broken: their boss Jean is fired and the job is then offered to Guido. His place is also taken by a new employee named Alain Vandam. Although it is difficult for Alain to ground, he can count on Sammy Tanghe, an employee from a neighboring island, to help him integrate. However, all these hierarchical shifts have a major impact on employees...

Hilarious Flemish TV series, with a colorful mishmash of characters with multiple angles. The acting is strong, the dialogues are timely enough to make you cry with laughter. Especially the interaction between Alain Vandam (Tom Van Dyck) and Sammy Tanghe (Bruno Vanden Broucke) is very strong. I think this first series is just a bit better than the second, not least because Sien Eggers plays an important role in it, and Alain is not yet generally accepted by the colleagues, which is mainly due to wonderful struggles with Frankie Loosveld (Wim Opbrouck) yields.

Together with Van Vlees en Bloed, Het Peulengaleis and Quiz Me Quick, this series can compete for the first place of the Flemish TV series in my personal list.

4.5 stars

I get special warm feelings about this series. Didn't realize nostalgia was possible in the early 00s. Het Eiland is one of the most successful Dutch-language series that can express dryness and empathy in the context of everyday life. Sometimes the series is a bit bland, but that can be digested with such wonderfully conceived characters. Season 1 better captures the atmosphere of the daily boredom in Flemish (and generally Western) office life. But compared to the predecessor, the second season falls far less often and it manages to keep the balance between the absurd and the bland. The dynamics that arise on the island where the infantile Frankie sees the socially handicapped Alain as an intruder on his meaningful office life is central to the first series of episodes. That tension crumbles in production a year later after the two characters finally embraced each other. Fortunately, that is soon resolved with a new storyline.

What makes this Belgian series especially successful is that Jan Eelen understood when to stop. The second season gives exactly the extra humor, atmosphere (and even a bit of suspense) that the first season was missing and at the same time closes the series at its peak.

At the time I had very high expectations of Het Eiland. I thought The Office was brilliant, I thought In the Gloria was brilliant, so then this cross-pollination had to produce fireworks, right?

I remember that Het Geslacht De Pauw was programmed on Friday and Het Eiland on Saturday. I was really looking forward to the second one, I knew little about the first one and therefore had no expectations.

But while the De Pauw family had me doubled over laughing from the first minute, I found Het Eiland quite disappointing. I thought this was more like FC De Kampioenen than The Office.

I managed to keep it up for a few more episodes, but Het Eiland was one of the biggest disappointments in terms of series for me. And The De Pauw Family remains for me the most witty thing ever made.

Anyway, The Island has since acquired a kind of iconic status for many and I have now given it another chance. Of course I know the one-liners, but I wanted to watch the series in its entirety.

And that turned out very well. Sometimes I still think it's a bit too loud and some characters are very close to caricature, but it's all much less bad than how I remembered it. Of course, it doesn't have the subtlety of In de Gloria, but it's still quite funny.

It is a bit more aimed at a large audience than In de Gloria, but nevertheless I am happy that I sat down to watch it again, 20 years later. Season 2 will follow soon.
