Delicious.

The tone needs to ground. The cynicism used is always lurking that it becomes somewhat bland or starts to come across as too made up. It doesn't do that here and that's very refreshing.

In fact, that consistently effective cynicism is gradually supplemented by genuine drama on the one hand and increasingly poignant light-heartedness on the other - in fact the components of cynicism. The series thus takes over the character of the main character more and more. Soundtrack reinforces that split (not subtle but effective).

With great respect for Applegate. Those who are not immediately convinced can still be surprised in and towards the denouement: she gets a few spicy scenes but continues to deliver impressive game.

The rest, too, but in the end she manages to transcend the rest with a character that is as lifelike as it is completely different from what I've seen of her so far (which basically boils down to Married w/Children, Friends, and that Babysitter movie) .

Plot gets a few flashy pushes (Nick, the pregnancy story), but everything is neatly processed and remains believable. Characters like Lorna and Abe (supporting roles) also come to life. Perhaps the children and the uninterested inspector remain a bit flat, but otherwise the characters (and dialogues) are very well written.

So a few episodes have to find its way through this series, but afterwards all doubts are gone for me. I thought this was very strong.

Pleasant surprise. At one point I read everywhere that this was the 'next best thing' around the end of Game of Thrones, and I took the chance. Christina Applegate is beautiful my favorite actress, but what a good role she plays here! She knows how to find the perfect balance between comedy and drama. The writers also manage to find that balance, because the entire series switches very naturally between these two genres. I generally like Linda Cardellini a bit more because of her role in Freaks and Geeks, but she puts down a pretty annoying character here.

As far as I'm concerned, a successful mix of comedy and drama, as you rarely come across. With a good dose of cynicism. I started this series without any prior knowledge, and it was a very pleasant surprise. It has to be said that Christina Apllegate absolutely carries the show, both in front of and behind the cameras: she is also 1 of the producers.
