Blackadder plot

Down through the ages, talented and brave men have contributed to England's honorable and noble history. Others, such as the hypocritical, despicable Edmund, Duke of Edinburgh (aka Blackadder), the bitter and mad son of a medieval king, have risen from the dust of dodgy documents to claim their illegitimate position in history.

The fourth, last and ultimately the best season of Blackadder. That last statement is of course entirely my own opinion, fueled by not only the quality of the humor but also the background story; trench madness during WWI.

Rowan Atkinson of course plays the lead role again, and in this season portrays a very cynical character from the extensive family tree of the Blackadder family. That cynicism, and also the accompanying weasel behavior, fits very aptly into the zeitgeist. When Blackadder once again lashes out at his personal piss-pole Baldrick, it always sounds like an indictment of the war, which gives this season a somewhat bleaker, darker side than the first three seasons, and I like that very much. Moreover, this humor is of the highest order, with the necessary rudeness and absurdity.

In addition to the main characters Blackadder and Baldrick, I especially notice General Melchett in a positive way, excellently portrayed by Stephen Fry. His secretary, the slime ball Captain Darling, is, his name says it all, mainly a lightning rod for the other protagonists.

A star role in episode 4 is also reserved for Rick Mayall, who gives shape to the legendary Lord Flashheart, and that made me laugh several times.

wuff!

Fourth and final season of the hit comedy series Black Adder. Like the third season, this fourth season is once again masterful, with hilarious episodes like “Corporal Punishment”, “Private Plane” and “General Hospital”. The series won a BAFTA award for best comedy series in 1990 and Rowan Atkinson was also awarded for his role as Captain BlackAdder. The supporting roles of Tony Robinson, Hugh Laurie, Tim McInnery and Stephen Fry are once again hilarious and the series has some masterful cameos from Rik Mayall and Miranda Richardson. Despite the great success, a fifth season never materialized. However, several TV specials appeared over the years. Also known as BlackAdder goes Forth.

Blackadder goes out with a bang!

This fourth season looks at the First World War in different ways. Captain Blackadder is the cynical defeatist; Lieutenant George the naive patriot who swallows all war propaganda with boyish enthusiasm. General Melchett gives completely nonsensical orders.

A lot of humor is in the one-liners, replies and far-fetched comparisons (often with the word since). Satire revolves around the partiality of a court martial and the absurdity of war. Sometimes the charge against the massacre takes on a serious undertone. The ending is more gripping than many weighty war dramas. The best guest role is Miranda Richardson as a nurse. Episodes 2 and 5 are legendary.
