Skeleton Warriors plot

During a failed theft of the Lightstar Crystal in the city of Luminaire, the crystal is split. The evil baron is transformed by his portion into a living skeleton with the power to transform others into skeletal warriors. The prince and his siblings, who possess the other half of the crystal, form the Legion of Light to oppose Baron Dark and his army, leading to a battle between light and darkness.

Ik was dol op deze serie in de jaren 90. Anno 2025 ben ik toch wel van mening dat in die prachtige tijd dat wij kind waren, Skeleton Warriors de meest extreme uitgezonden tekenfilm was en was dan ook zijn tijd ver vooruit vanwege de duistere, post-apocalyptische fantasysetting, complexe verhaallijn en volwassen thema's. De serie onderscheidde zich van andere actietekenfilms uit die tijd door duistere elementen niet te schuwen en te laten zien dat helden niet altijd schone overwinningen boeken. In onze huidige tijd had het allemaal beter tot zijn recht gekomen, denk ik. Uiteindelijk had dat, plus een slecht verkopende speelgoedlijn (series 1) waarbij ook nog eens corruptie om de hoek kwam kijken, een heel groot nadelig effect op de franchise. Zowel het tweede seizoen van de tekenfilm als de tweede serie van de speelgoedlijn zou nooit het daglicht zien. Eeuwig zonde, aangezien er 100 seizoenen van de Power Rangers in omloop zijn (LOL).

I loved this series in the '90s. In 2025, I still believe that during that wonderful time when we were kids, Skeleton Warriors was the most extreme cartoon on the air, and was certainly ahead of its time thanks to its dark, post-apocalyptic fantasy setting, complex storyline, and mature themes.

The series distinguished itself from other action cartoons of the time by not shying away from dark elements and by showing that heroes don't always achieve clean victories. I think it would have been more effective in our current era.

Ultimately, that, combined with a poorly selling toy line (series 1), which was also plagued by corruption, had a major negative impact on the franchise. Both the second season of the cartoon and the second series of the toy line never saw the light of day.

Such a shame, considering there are 100 seasons of Power Rangers in circulation (LOL).
