Ik had hoge verwachtingen vooraf van deze show, omdat dit de nieuwe animatieserie is van Raphael Bob-Waksberg. Die heeft met Undone en vooral BoJack Horseman twee van mijn absoluut favoriete series ooit gemaakt. Goed nieuws: Long Story Short is ook weer geweldig. Het is in de basis een sitcom over een joodse familie, de Schwoopers. Vader Elliott, moeder Naomi, zoons Avi en Yoshi en dochter Shira. Naomi is een beetje een wandelend cliché van een joodse moeder die met scherpe New Yorkse tongval - terwijl de familie al decennia in Californië woont - altijd alles passief-agressief afkraakt en alles om haar laat draaien. De eerste aflevering was daarom niet meer dan aardig. Maar dan gaat Bob-Waksberg met dit standaard gegeven spelen. De serie springt de hele tijd door de tijd, zodat oorzaak en gevolg over langere tijd van hoe de familieleden elkaar beïnvloeden duidelijk wordt en er komen ook genoeg van de bizarre zijstapjes voorbij die we ook van BoJack kennen. Long Story Short blijft iets dichter bij de realiteit, maar iets als de matrassenaflevering is nog steeds hilarisch. Of de wolven op de school. Maar ook de emotionele voltreffers die we kennen van BoJack Horseman komen terug en die gaan in Long Story Short vaak over de joodse achtergrond van de familie. De animatie is ook creatief en wisselt regelmatig van stijl, soms naar een bijna psychedelische stijl die me typisch genoeg wel een beetje aan de Pink Panther-cartoons deed denken. Het zijn 10 afleveringen van 25 minuten, dus je kunt je er geen buil aan vallen. Bedenk dus ook dat de eerste aflevering de minste is. De derde aflevering is de matrassenaflevering. Een tweede seizoen is al bevestigd. (Gezien op Netflix)

I had high expectations for this show beforehand, because this is the new animated series by Raphael Bob-Waksberg. With Undone and especially BoJack Horseman, he created two of my absolute favorite series ever. Good news: Long Story Short is great again.

At its core, it is a sitcom about a Jewish family, the Schwoopers. Father Elliott, mother Naomi, sons Avi and Yoshi, and daughter Shira. Naomi is somewhat of a walking cliché of a Jewish mother who, with a sharp New York accent—even though the family has lived in California for decades—always passively-aggressively criticizes everything and makes everything revolve around herself. The first episode was therefore nothing more than decent.

But then Bob-Waksberg starts playing with this standard premise. The series jumps through time all the time, so that cause and effect regarding how the family members influence each other over a longer period becomes clear, and there are also plenty of the bizarre digressions that we know from BoJack. Long Story Short stays a bit closer to reality, but something like the mattress episode is still hilarious. Or the wolves at the school.

But the emotional knockout blows we know from BoJack Horseman also return, and in Long Story Short, they often revolve around the family's Jewish background.

The animation is also creative and regularly switches styles, sometimes to an almost psychedelic style that, typically enough, reminded me a bit of the Pink Panther cartoons.

It consists of 10 episodes of 25 minutes, so you can't go wrong. Just keep in mind that the first episode is the weakest. The third episode is the mattress episode. A second season has already been confirmed.
