The Primetime Emmy Awards is an awards ceremony dedicated to celebrating the best of primetime television each year whether it be from an artistic or technical point of view. It is generally considered to be the most prestigious TV award ceremony in the world and has been running since the first ceremony took place at the Hollywood Athletic Club in Los Angeles in 1949.
The most coveted awards are for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series, Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series, though each of the awards given on the night comes with its own degree of prestige.
Each category winner is awarded a copy of a golden statuette as a trophy which depicts a winged muse holding an electron.
