El Turco plot
Balaban is a soldier in the Janissary army, a group of European slaves who have converted to Islam, and serves as an Ottoman intelligence officer. When the Ottoman army loses the Battle of Vienna in 1683, he is captured. After escaping, he is found wounded and rescued by the people of Moena, a small town in Northern Italy. He settles there and organizes a peasant uprising against the feudal rulers who oppress and overtax the people. Knowing his Ottoman origins, they give him the nickname El Turco.
