Broadchurch plot

The quiet southern English coastal town of Broadchurch is rocked by the murder of 11-year-old Danny Latimer. The police investigation is led by Detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller. Ellie has known the victim's family for years and is struggling with the immense grief Danny's death has caused in Broadchurch. She also struggles with various personal dilemmas, as well as the fact that she hates working with Hardy. Tension rises between the two when budding journalist Olly, Ellie's nephew, interferes with the investigation in an annoying way. Everyone tries their own way to find out what happened to Danny. Suspicions are expressed, which leads to a lot of unrest in the small village community. Even Ellie's own son Tom seems to have something to hide...

Despite the fact that the level of season 1 is no longer reached, this is also an improvement on season 2 in my opinion. The latter suffered from a much less interesting case and a slightly too slow pace of the lawsuit. This third season, on the other hand, is a lot more exciting and that makes a difference. Everyone has a motive, everyone is suspect. On the other hand, there are also a number of negative aspects that stand out. As mentioned above, there seem to be some plot holes. In addition, things are also completed a little too quickly (I especially found that the mystery is solved very quickly at some point, including the connection with the other two rapes) and moreover, some things are not completely clear. I refer in particular to the difficulties that the Latimer family still struggles with. They're essential characters in the first two seasons, of course, but here they were a little redundant.

All in all, I thought Broadchurch was a very enjoyable, mostly strong series. It's a shame that this is already the last season, but on the other hand I also think that in some respects the cake is finished (again I refer to the Latimer family). However, the collaboration between Hardy and Miller remains fun until the last minute. David Tennant and Olivia Colman bring the series to life and deserve credit for their strong acting. And of course I also enjoyed the beautiful images that this series regularly has to offer.

3.5*

Despite the promising start, I am not impressed with this season. It is bursting with stigmas: men are bad: they lie, cheat, are selfish, sex-hungry and/or violent. Women are good: caring, forgiving, faithful, vulnerable and forming a collective.

That's pretty much the bottom line, just like in Top of the Lake. The setup of the mystery is good but in the second half it gets bogged down. Oh porn on your phone, what a shame... and grandpa with his old-fashioned views. In the end, there appears to be a connection between that porn and the perpetrators, but it feels forced/moralizing.

Just like in season two, there are soap/tv-like features such as a lot of dialogue with the heads full on screen and it is very plot-driven, where I find the atmosphere disappointing (with the occasional nice shot in between, but had more could be done with such a setting on the coast). It's also awkward how the umpteenth man the detectives talk to looks at them suspiciously as they walk away.

Too bad, I really like season 1 and 3 starts at that same level, but in the end the who-dunnit element is the only thing that S3 really needs.

This series is mainly about the environment and the characters. The plot is often not very original. That's not bad at all because with detectives I often tend to look for the end. The journey there is more than worth it.
