Clay Jensen is a young man who comes home one day to find a mysterious box with his name on it. The content consists of a set of cassettes featuring his classmate Hannah Baker. The sinister thing about the whole thing is that Hannah, whom Clay was in love with, committed suicide two weeks earlier. On the tapes, she explains that she had thirteen different reasons for ending her life.

Sterke serie. Intens past wel bij de omschrijving. Acteren was erg sterk, editing en soundtrack zaten gelukkig ook goed in elkaar. En wat de serie iig goed doet is discussie over het onderwerp creeeren. Niet dat die er niet is maar ook nu organisaties zich op de serie storten en bijvoorbeeld afkeuren dat de daad zelf zo grafisch in beeld werd gebracht slecht is voor mensen die met soortgelijke problemen rondlopen. Wat de serie ook goed vertaald is dat het slachtoffer, Hannah in dit geval, niet zonder fouten is. Genoeg momenten dat je denkt dat had je anders moeten doen. Maar ook bij degene die in haar waarheid verantwoordelijk waren zie je dat bedoelingen soms anders zijn en het gevolg niet is dat wat je wenst en dat je niet direct een slecht persoon bent. Er zijn eigenlijk maar drie personages waar ik geen sympathie voor kon krijgen (Bryce voorop natuurlijk, en daarnaast Courtney en Marcus. Wat misschien wel iets te dik erboven op lag waren de rollen van de diverse ouders. In tegenstelling tot wat sommige zeggen dat de serie weinig oplossing bied ben ik het niet helemaal mee eens. De serie laat een bepaalde afloop zien. Maar de kwestie wordt ook bij de kijker gelegd. Wat zou jij als buitenstaander/vriend van hebben gedaan? Oorzaak gevolg. Iemand laten weten dat je om ze geeft en luistert.

Strong series. Intense fits the description. Acting was very strong, editing and soundtrack were fortunately also well put together.

And what the series does really well is to create discussion about the subject. Not that there isn't, but even now that organizations are throwing themselves into the series and, for example, rejecting the fact that the act itself was depicted in such a graphical way is bad for people who walk around with similar problems.

What the series also translates well is that the victim, Hannah in this case, is not without flaws. Enough moments when you think you should have done differently. But also with those who were responsible in her truth you see that sometimes intentions are different and the result is not what you wish and that you are not directly a bad person. There are really only three characters that I couldn't get any sympathy for (Bryce first of course, and next to that Courtney and Marcus. What was perhaps a bit too much on top of it were the roles of the various parents.

Contrary to what some say that the series offers little solution, I do not completely agree. The series has a certain ending. But the issue is also put to the viewer. What would you have done as an outsider/friend?

Teleurstellend. Ik had gedacht dat het beter zou worden, maar ik heb een wrang gevoel tegenover hoe de hoofdrolspeelster iedereen en alles beschuldigt van haar zelfmoord, en hoe iedereen ook bang is om terechtgewezen te worden. Ik vind het een echt vreemde gedachte. Op de verkrachting na, vind ik dat ze geen reden tot klagen heeft, en dat geen enkele reden in die mate offensief was, dat iemand er voor veroordeelt voor moet worden, of dat iemand de schuld van Hannah's zelfmoord voor de rest van zijn leven moet dragen. Daar gaat de serie voor mij echt compleet uit de bocht, en kan ik absoluut niet slikken. De dingen die met Hannah gebeurd zijn, zijn gewoon alledaagse dingen die op elke school gebeuren, maar voor die redenen een zelfmoord op iemand afschuiven vind ik niet kunnen. Al ben ik wel van mening dat zelfmoord geen taboe hoort te zijn, en mensen die uit het leven willen stappen die kans ook moeten krijgen. Aangezien ik zelf ook veel met zelfmoordgedachten sukkel, had ik gehoopt iets aan deze serie te hebben, maar mij doet de serie me heel erg weinig, en ik had er gehoopt meer uit te halen. De serie kijkt verder overigens wel "lekker" weg, maar dat is voor mij niet voldoende.

Disappointing. I thought it would get better, but I have a bad feeling about how the lead actress is accusing everyone and everything of her suicide, and how everyone is also afraid of being reprimanded. I think it's a really strange thought. Other than the rape, I think she has no reason to complain, and that no reason was offensive to the extent that anyone should be convicted for it, or blamed for it Hannah's suicide for the rest of his life. That's where the series really goes completely off the rails for me, and I absolutely can't swallow it. The things that happened to Hannah are just everyday things that happen in every school, but I don't think it's possible to blame someone for suicide for those reasons. Although I do believe that suicide should not be a taboo, and people who want to take their own life should also be given the opportunity. Since I also struggle a lot with suicidal thoughts, I had hoped to get something out of this series, but the series does very little for me, and I had hoped to get more out of it. The series also looks "nice" away, but that's not enough for me.

Er valt best wel wat kritiek te geven op deze serie maar ik ben er toch enthousiast over. Het hele format is goed gevonden en dit zorgt ervoor dat je verder wil kijken. Vanaf halverwege wordt het echt intens, met aflevering/tape 11 als hoogtepunt. De aflevering nadien gaat er mijns inziens wat over, maar ook hiervoor geldt: ik zie rationeel wel dat het soms 'van dik hout zaagt men planken' is, het raakt me alsnog. Ik dacht aanvankelijk gewoon alleen seizoen 1 te gaan kijken, maar seizoen 2 ga ik er zeker achteraan doen, na even een pauze om wat minder onrustig te slapen hopelijk... (In sterren maak ik er een 4 van.) PS. Deze serie is natuurlijk één groot statement tegen zelfmoord. Het omgekeerde van verheerlijking of aanzetten tot dus.

There is quite a bit to criticize about this series, but I am enthusiastic about it anyway. The entire format is well found and this makes you want to look further. It gets really intense from the halfway point, with episode/tape 11 being the highlight. The episode after that is in my opinion something about it, but also applies to this: I can rationally see that it is sometimes 'thick wood is sawn planks', it still touches me. At first I thought I'd just watch season 1, but I'll definitely do it after season 2, after a break to sleep a little less restless hopefully...

(In stars I make it a 4.)

PS. This series is of course one big statement against suicide. The reverse of glorification or incitement to so.
