Very strong film adaptation of Scurati's book.

As expected, lots of politics but also the action scenes are excellently done, much attention to the brutal violence of the fascists. Breaking the fourth wall makes Mussolini's motives and not just the flat filming of the course of events, clear.

Similarities with current affairs in the US are not to be missed.

Tour de force by Marinelli!

Italians love drama and loudly expressing their emotions. We already knew that. The recordings of the 'debates' in parliament are a striking example of this. Those who like that can indulge themselves with this series about the rise and first years of government of Benito Mussolini. We northerners are usually a bit more down to earth, but that's beside the point. We are talking about the period from around 1919 to 1925, so long before Hitler came to power in Germany. You could say that Mussolini was the inventor of fascism. Although, there were already earlier movements and views that were related to it.

Back to the series. I can sympathize with Mza. I also got a bit tired of that screaming and cursing rabble-rouser always turning to me to tell me what was going on. I could see that myself. It undoubtedly comes from the mind of director Joe Wright, who has made wonderfully nuanced films. Why he started this nonsense is a mystery to me. Because for whom are you making such a series, a hundred years after the fact? Who does it mean anything anymore? Who are all those people? That D'Annunzio, De Bono, Cesare Rossi, Italo Balbo? They were vaguely known to me, but in Italy? Among young people, and older people? I don't believe it.

I have to admit, Marinelli's acting is top-notch. The series makes it clear how brutally the fascists went on, with the murder of MP Mateotti as the 'highlight'. Just like the SA in Germany later went on a rampage against Jews and dissidents. I did find it funny how King Victor Emmanuel was made a fool of on his too high throne and with braces around his legs for support. There was still something to laugh about. I fear that this series will have a sequel, because from 1925 to 1945, that's quite a long way.
