The New Pope plot

When Pope Pius XIII falls into a coma, the Vatican must look for a replacement to sit in the Holy See. The most viable candidate is Sir John Brannox, an intellectual English Aristocrat known for a theological text, "The Middle Way," which he wrote in his youth. Upon arrival at the Vatican, the Catholic delegates are swept up into an empire almost as mysterious and full of secrets as they left behind in Rome.

Prima opvolger van The Young Pope, met al net zo'n maffe maar verslavende mengeling van drama en surrealistische humor. Denk aan een kruising tussen The Godfather en Twin Peaks. Zoiets. De toevoeging van John Malkovich aan de cast blijkt al snel een meesterzet; zo goed hebben we hem de afgelopen tien, twintig jaar niet meer gezien en zijn personage zorgt al snel voor een andere sfeer binnen het Vaticaan. Verder weer meer dan genoeg intriges, seks en geweld om de kerk van begin tot eind tegen de borst te stuiten. Leuke cameo's ook van Marilyn Manson en Sharon Stone, twee favoriete artiesten van de paus.

Excellent follow-up to The Young Pope, with an equally wacky but addictive mixture of drama and surreal humor. Think of a cross between The Godfather and Twin Peaks. something like that. The addition of John Malkovich to the cast quickly proves to be a masterstroke; we haven't seen him this well in the last ten, twenty years and his character is quickly changing the atmosphere within the Vatican. Furthermore, more than enough intrigue, sex and violence to disappoint the church from start to finish. Nice cameos also from Marilyn Manson and Sharon Stone, two of the Pope's favorite artists.

Lang geleden dat ik zo onder de indruk was van een serie. The New Pope (die volgens mij als deel 2 van The Young Pope op deze website zou moeten staan) heeft alles in huis. Prachtige beelden vanuit het Vaticaan en Venetië. Een ode aan kunst, literatuur, verleiding, het menselijke en het mysterieuze. Dialogen om van te smullen door overdreven eloquente personages. Een paar acteerkanonnen die het scherm grijpen: John Malkovich is indrukwekkend en anders de acteur die kardinaal-staatssecretaris Voiello speelt wel. De serie is heerlijk traag, maar ik lag elke aflevering op diverse momenten dubbel van het lachen om de vele subtiele humor die vaak bestaat uit het cynisch werelds neerzetten van zogenaamd perfecte gelovigen. Ook tijdens de introductie van het personage van John Malkovich lag ik meermaals dubbel van het lachen om de heerlijke dialogen tussen zijn personage (Sir John Brannox) en Voiello, waarin de toekomstige Paus zich zo zwaarmoedig depressief voelt en de scherpe Voiello de stiltes volpraat. Elke aflevering eindigt met het absurde hilarische aanzicht van een of meerdere personages uit de show die je ziet dansen. Je kan het regisseur Sorrentino ook toevertrouwen om veel verleiding in de kerk te gooien: reken op veel naakt en sexy dansende en ravende nonnen.

It's been a long time since I was this impressed by a series. The New Pope (which I think should be on this website as part 2 of The Young Pope) has it all. Beautiful images from the Vatican and Venice. An ode to art, literature, seduction, the human and the mysterious. Dialogues to feast on by overly eloquent characters. A couple of acting guns that grab the screen: John Malkovich is impressive and otherwise the actor who plays Cardinal Secretary of State Voiello is. The series is wonderfully slow, but at various moments I was doubled over with laughter at the many subtle humor that often consists of the cynically worldly portrayal of supposedly perfect believers. Also during the introduction of John Malkovich's character I was repeatedly laughing out loud at the wonderful dialogues between his character (Sir John Brannox) and Voiello, in which the future Pope feels so melancholy depressed and the sharp Voiello fills the silences. Each episode ends with the absurdly hilarious view of one or more characters from the show you see dancing. You can also trust director Sorrentino to throw a lot of temptation into the church: count on a lot of nude and sexy dancing and raving nuns.
