De Ring plot

Lawyer Anna becomes entangled in a complicated sex case. When one day she puts a ring in her bag that is not hers, the theft is unfortunately captured on camera footage. Simon, the owner of the ring and her main client, sees this as an opportunity to blackmail her. He threatens to take the footage to the police, which would destroy Anna's career unless she agrees to his demands to sleep with him. However, Anna has just fallen in love with Max and does not want to jeopardize her new happiness. Determined to keep Simon at bay, Anna does everything she can to defend herself.

Creator, director and screenwriter Frank Ketelaar (Klem, Overspel, BuZa) can almost be called the Taylor Sheridan (Mayor of Kingstown, 1883, Yellowstone) of the Low Countries. Ketelaar draws his stories with thick felt-tip pen, inspiration, speed and enthusiasm. Just like Sheridan. However, no (neo)-westerns for Ketelaar. Klem, Overspel and Red Light are excellent, typically Dutch drama series, with gripping themes and appealing and layered characters. Unfortunately, that does not apply to the Ring.

The main premise - young, successful lawyer (sic!) steals ugly ring and is blackmailed - is not very credible. The 10-part series remains superficial, sometimes repetitive and ultimately predictable in the further course. At the same time, the Ring has a good flow, is easy to watch and has a few surprising plot twists. The Ring has undeniable flair but lacks, partly due to the changing acting, the much-needed depth.

I am a fan of Dutch thriller and crime series. The Ring has an unbelievable pretext. The reaction of his lawyer/victim is the same. The clothing producer is also very concerned. In short, the story makes no sense. I can't stand that.

The acting of the supporting roles is sometimes embarrassingly bad. Rehearsed sentences with a tendency to overact. I find the leading roles convincing acting. It's a shame that they act in this idiotic story.

I'll watch the series to the end. Want to know how the writers get out of this strange situation.

Hannah Hoekstra cycles through the streets. Minne Koole solves a puzzle in a picturesque garden house. Benja Bruijning is a charming asshole in the fashion industry. Something with sexual extortion and a murder. Also something with an artist who commits suicide and a brother with an inferiority complex. Charlie Chan Dagelet has scruples. Delilah Warcup-Van Eyck has a hard time with the sudden death of her husband. You could easily fit this into a two-hour feature film, but 'De Ring' (2024) crawls along at the same excruciating snail's pace for ten episodes. With theatrical staccato dialogues and ridiculous plot twists. If you put a gun to my head to say something positive about it, it's that Frank Ketelaar always knows how to convey the atmosphere of a city. 'De Ring' (2024) radiates Utrecht from start to finish. If only there had been more to honor that beautiful city.
