Herbekeken na al die jaren en The Wire blijft buitencategorie. De eerste minuten vreesde ik even dat het allemaal wat gedateerd zou gaan aanvoelen, maar ik zat er snel weer volledig in. Gevoelsmatig vormt The Wire samen met The Sopranos en Mad Men voor mij de absolute toplaag in serieland, hoewel het soms moeilijk vergelijken is als je iets 15 jaar geleden gezien hebt. Na dit eerste seizoen opnieuw te hebben bekeken, ben ik het evenwel zeker: The Wire is een serie van het allerhoogste kaliber. 5 dikke sterren voor dit icoon van de televisiegeschiedenis.

Re-examined after all these years and The Wire remains exceptional. The first few minutes I feared that it would all feel a bit dated, but I was soon fully into it again. Instinctively, The Wire together with The Sopranos and Mad Men form the absolute top layer in series land for me, although it is sometimes difficult to compare if you saw something 15 years ago. However, after re-watching this first season, I am certain: The Wire is a series of the highest caliber. 5 big stars for this icon of television history.

Wederom een goede serie van HBO met een zeer interessant uitgangspunt maar de trage opbouw en het soms langdradige verloop zorgde er bij mij voor dat hij mij persoonlijk minder kon grijpen dan de andere series van HBO die in het vergelijkbare thema zaten zoals The Sopranos en Oz. Het ontbeert de actie en spanning van Oz en de verfijnde gelaagdheid, gitzwarte humor en karakterontwikkeling van The Sopranos in mijn optiek. De karakters waren zoals ze waren maar leken in mijn optiek niet echt verder te ontwikkelen en dat maakte het moeilijker voor mij om met ze mee te leven en met de serie te mee te groeien. De serie is wel heel realistisch. Organised Crime aanpakken is iets van de lange adem en lijkt soms of je kijkt naar verf die aan het drogen is en niet met veel bombarie en een hoop pief paf poef. Hierin is de serie dus een beetje vergelijkbaar met Spooks. Dat was de demythologisering van de intelligence agencies en The Wire demythologiseert dus het recherchewerk. Wat dat betreft is het wel goed want het publiek moet ook wel eens weten hoe lang een onderzoek naar een misdaadorganisatie duurt en wat voor werk het kost om ze uiteindelijk achter de tralies te krijgen maar ook dat dit eigenlijk een druppel op de gloeiende plaat is omdat de opvolgers al staan te trappelen. Toch had voor de entertainmentfactor iets meer actie en spanning wel beter geweest. Nu was het voor mij een goede serie die helaas soms moeilijk was om door te komen.

Again a good series from HBO with a very interesting premise, but the slow build-up and the sometimes long-winded course meant that it was less able to grab me personally than the other HBO series that were in the similar theme such as The Sopranos and Oz. It lacks the action and suspense of Oz and the refined layering, pitch black humor and character development of The Sopranos in my view. The characters were as they were but didn't seem to really develop in my view and that made it harder for me to empathize with them and grow with the series. The series is very realistic. Tackling organized crime is something of the long haul and sometimes it seems like you're looking at paint drying and not with much fanfare and a lot of paf paf poof. In this, the series is a bit similar to Spooks. That was the demythologizing of the intelligence agencies and The Wire therefore demythologizes the investigative work. In that respect it is good because the public also needs to know how long an investigation into a criminal organization takes and what kind of work it takes to eventually get them behind bars, but also that this is actually a drop in the ocean because the successors are already eager. Still, for the entertainment factor, a little more action and tension would have been better. Now for me it was a good series that unfortunately was difficult to get through at times.

De serie neemt zijn tijd en bouwt personages, plot en spanning langzaam op, maar eenmaal op stoom is dit genieten geblazen. Wat een karakters en wat een geweldige dialogen. Het 4:3 beeldformaat oogt tegenwoordig natuurlijk hopeloos gedateerd, maar afgezien daarvan heeft dit nog amper aan kracht ingeboet. Langzaam maar zeker vormt zich een groots verhaal, dat als een sneeuwbal steeds meer aan kracht wint. Benieuwd hoe de reeks zich verder gaat ontwikkelen.

The series takes its time and slowly builds up characters, plot and tension, but once up and running it's fun. What great characters and what great dialogue. The 4:3 image format now looks hopelessly dated, but apart from that, it has barely lost any of its power. Slowly but surely a grand story is forming, which is gaining in strength like a snowball. Curious to see how the series will develop.
