Selena: The Series vertelt het levensverhaal van Selena Quintanilla ook wel bekend als the Queen of Tejanomusic, Amerikaans-Mexicaanse popmuziek die zijn oorsprong in Texas heeft. Selena werd in 1995 op 23 jarige leeftijd vermoord door de voorzitster van haar fanclub Yolanda Saldivar wegens een zakelijk geschil. Haar dood schokte Amerika destijds want Selena was geliefd in de latinogemeenschap maar inmiddels ook bij een breder publiek. Season 2 pikt de draad op waar season 1 ophield en werkt in nog eens 9 afleveringen naar de tragische ontknoping van het leven van de Queen of Tejano music. Waar het eerste seizoen nog redelijk wat vaart had omdat de weg naar de roem getoond werd, kabbelt seizoen 2 maar wat voort. Als kijker wil je eigenlijk maar twee dingen zien: haar laatste concert in de Houston Astrodome wat het hoogtepunt van haar carrière vormde en de tragische moord die haar jonge leven zo abrupt beëindigde. De rest van de tijd wordt opgevuld met wat voor de kijker hoogstens bijzaken zijn. Hooguit de reuring rondom haar huwelijk met gitarist Chris Perez is enigzins interessant voor ons als buitenstaanders. De soundtrack die naast uiteraard Selena's eigen muziek ook heel veel bekende early '90's hits van o.a En Vogue en Ace of Base bevat is wel uitstekend. Selena The series: season 2 duurt eigenlijk 7 afleveringen te lang en daarom adviseer ik mensen die geïnteresseerd zijn in het fenomeen Selena Quintanilla vooral om de biopic uit 1997 met Jennifer Lopez te bekijken. Same story in less time.

Selena: The Series tells the life story of Selena Quintanilla also known as the Queen of Tejanomusic, American-Mexican pop music that originated in Texas. Selena was murdered in 1995 at the age of 23 by her fan club president Yolanda Saldivar over a business dispute. Her death shocked America at the time because Selena was loved in the Latino community but now also with a wider audience.

Season 2 picks up where Season 1 left off and works through a further 9 episodes towards the tragic denouement of the life of the Queen of Tejano music. Where the first season still had quite a bit of momentum because the road to fame was shown, season 2 just keeps on rolling. As a viewer, you really only want to see two things: her last concert at the Houston Astrodome which was the pinnacle of her career and the tragic murder that ended her young life so abruptly. The rest of the time is filled with what for the viewer are at most side issues. At most the commotion surrounding her marriage to guitarist Chris Perez is somewhat interesting to us as outsiders. The soundtrack, which of course contains Selena's own music as well as many well-known early '90s hits from, among others, En Vogue and Ace of Base, is excellent.

Selena The series: season 2 is actually 7 episodes too long and that's why I advise people who are interested in the phenomenon Selena Quintanilla to watch the 1997 biopic with Jennifer Lopez. Same story in less time.

Het tweede seizoen gaat door waar het eerste is geëindigd, met een focus op de hele familie van Selena in plaats van op haar alleen, in tegenstelling tot de film. De moord op Selena komt natuurlijk in dit laatste seizoen aan bod. Helaas wordt dat iets te dramatisch aangezet, gezien de soundtrack en de melige flashbacks. Wel interessant is dat de serie een beetje een blik in het leven van de familie de jaren na de moord biedt. Meestal is het einde zodra men aangekomen is bij de dood van de artiest. Door het einde wat minder dan het vorige seizoen. 2,5*.

The second season picks up where the first left off, focusing on Selena's entire family rather than just her, unlike the movie. The murder of Selena is of course discussed in this last season. Unfortunately, that is a bit too dramatic, given the soundtrack and the corny flashbacks. Interestingly, the series offers a bit of a glimpse into the family's life in the years after the murder. Usually the end is as soon as one arrives at the death of the artist. Because of the ending a bit less than the previous season. 2.5*.
