Essie Davis passionately plays the part of Miss Phryne ("Fraini") Fisher, a private detective who likes to stick her graceful nose into police matters. She was born in Australia, but lived in England for many years. With her inherited title, she follows the tradition of the gentleman detective, but in a feminine version. She has very progressive ideas for her time. She is rambunctious and unconventional.

The setting in Melbourne in 1928 is very successful. Phryne's bob haircut in the style of Louise Brooks must be a wig. Clothes, accessories and interior are part of the fashion of the time, as is the music: charleston, tango, etc. Her car is a red Hispano-Suiza. A steam train and such an old-fashioned airplane also pass by. The ocean giant in the beginning of the first episode is computer animation.

The returning characters are well chosen. Inspector Robinson finds Phryne a busybody at first, but gradually comes to appreciate her. Catholic Dot and Sergeant Collins add a romantic storyline. Different social milieus are discussed, eg protesting dock workers and Zionists. They are pure whodunits, with some unavoidable clichƩs of the genre, but very fun to guess with. The humor and the brisk pace make it easy to digest. Lovers of classic detective series will certainly enjoy this.
