Jerry Seinfeld has teased the return of one of the most popular television series of all time, Seinfeld.
The sitcom ran from 1989 to 1998 and received critical acclaim as well as enormous viewing figures in the United States.
The finale aired on 14 May 1998 and no less than 76 MILLION viewers tuned in to see the final episode featuring Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer.
That final episode is widely regarded as a failure by many fans and even some of the people who worked on the show. The crew reunited in Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm and in one particular episode, Jerry says to Larry "We already screwed up one finale" with David responding "we didn't screw up a finale, that was a good finale!"
The Curb Your Enthusiasm reunion episodes received acclaim and many fans believe David used this as a do-over for the Seinfeld finale.
Seinfeld himself referenced the final episode in a recent stand-up comedy show, while hinting at a possible new episode.
“Well, I have a little secret for you about the ending. But I can’t really tell it because it is a secret,” he said.
“Here’s what I’ll tell you, OK, but you can’t tell anybody. Something is going to happen that has to do with that ending. Hasn’t happened yet. And just what you are thinking about, Larry and I have also been thinking about it. So you’ll see, we’ll see.”
Seinfeld regrets season finale
Jerry has previously stated regret at how the final episode played out, saying in 2017:
"I sometimes think we really shouldn't have even done it. There was a lot of pressure on us at that time to do one big last show, but big is always bad in comedy."
In the final episode of the series, the main characters are arrested, taken to court and charged after violating a local duty to rescue law.
