Gareth Edwards has disputed the various reports surrounding the troubled production of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
In May of 2016, reports emerged that additional writing and shoots were required to finish the movie, and that screenwriter Tony Gilroy had been asked to work for an additional five weeks to conclude the film.
The reports suggested at the time that Gilroy's presence as a second unit director undermined Edwards, though it was later revealed that the pair worked alongside each other to complete the production.
Gilroy was eventually given a main screenwriting credit alongside Chris Weitz.
Edwards has reflected on the tumultuous climax to the production, and it seems he is happy with his experience.
"The stuff that's out there on the internet about what happened on that film… there's so much inaccuracy about the whole thing, and Tony came in and he did a lot of great work for sure, no doubt about it," he said on KCRW’s The Business podcast.
"But we all worked together till the entire last minute of that movie. The very last thing that we filmed in the pickup shoot was the Darth Vader corridor scene. I did all of that stuff."
In a previous interview with Variety, Edwards said he felt "incredibly lucky" to have had the opportunity to work on a Star Wars movie.
"I got to make a Star Wars film," he said. "I won the lottery, in that sense. The idea of someone as privileged as me in any way implying that it was anything other than the amazing experience that it was to some extent – like, I don’t have any empathy for that person, and I don’t want to be that person either."
Rogue One went on to become a major critical success, earning over $1 billion at the box office and being nominated for two Academy Awards. It is generally considered to be the best Star Wars movie out of the main saga.
Edwards is currently promoting his new sci-fi epic, The Creator.
Rogue One cast: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker
