The film is set before Episode IV - A New Hope. Galen Erso is an esteemed scientist from the newly established Galactic Empire. His genius was critical to the technological development of the Death Star. Though he is opposed to the Empire, he sees no option but to cooperate. He still manages to sabotage the Empire's plans and make his actions known to the resistance. On this, a quirky group of rebels tries to carry out a desperate mission. He wants to steal the plans for Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor's rule.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the best Star Wars since The Empire Strikes Back. The film brings the 'War' back to Star Wars and the approach is a lot more mature than in The Force Awakens. Characters are not immortal and the humor is limited to the roles of Donnie Yen (as Chirrut Îmwe), his henchman and K-2SO, the new droid. However, the serious nature of Rogue One is never undermined and the two hours fly by. The second hour is really one of the best hours of all Star Wars movies.

There might be a few things to blame for this Star Wars stand alone movie. The characters may not be fleshed out very much, but that's hard to do in a single movie. Furthermore, there is criticism on the limited screentime of Vader. Only the strength of him in this film lies precisely in his little appearance. The sparse scenes in which he does appear subsequently come across all the better.
The film manages to build a perfect bridge between the original trilogies and it is therefore really enjoyable for the fans. The use of CGI on Tarkin and Princess Leia didn't bother me and was very well done. The hard ending that immediately closes this film and most of the characters is clever and a ballsy move for this stand alone film. You'd like to know more about some of the characters, but there's just no sequel right now.
Another strong point about Rogue One is that it goes straight to the point, no uninteresting side plots that there's no room for in a standalone like Rogue one. Furthermore, the action scenes are effectively and beautifully shot.
Yes, this is definitely one of the better Star Wars movies and it could have been a lot worse.
