There are FIVE major new movie releases in U.S. theaters this week, and we have all the details for you.

2023 has been a huge year for cinema, with the summer period flourishing thanks to the releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer. The movies were released around the same time and many theater-goers actually did the double-feature, which was affectionately named 'Barbenheimer'.

Barbie became the most successful movie ever directed by a solo female director, earning $1.44 billion at the box office, while Oppenheimer has made $943m. No pressure for the movies that follow, then.

The year has also been impacted by the writer and actor strike in Hollywood, as several productions have faced delays into 2024. Now those strikes are over, productions can recommence.

Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon was another huge release as that is expected to be an awards darling. The Marvels came out recently, too, and underwhelmed at the box office.

New Movie Releases this week

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom - 22 December, 2023

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be the end of an era for DC Studios as it will mark the final movie in the DC Extended Universe. A new universe is being developed by James Gunn, and with various recent disappointments like The Flash, DC are rebooting things, while star Jason Momoa has already suggested he won't play Arthur Curry/Aquaman again.

Official premise:

'After failing to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta wields the power of the mythic Black Trident to unleash an ancient and malevolent force. Hoping to end his reign of terror, Aquaman forges an unlikely alliance with his brother, Orm, the former king of Atlantis. Setting aside their differences, they join forces to protect their kingdom and save the world from irreversible destruction.'

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom cast: Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park and Nicole Kidman.

The Iron Claw - 22 December, 2023

The Von Erich family is one of the most famous families in the history of wrestling, but their dynasty has been overshadowed by what has been dubbed the 'Von Erich Curse' after various deaths and tragedies. The Iron Claw details the history of the family both professionally and personally.

Official premise:

'The film is centered around the Von Erich family, a dynasty of wrestlers from the 1960s onwards that had enormous success, and popularized the iron claw professional wrestling hold. However, they not only had to battle inside the ring, but fight the "Von Erich curse" outside of it.'

The Iron Claw cast: Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Holt McCallany, and Lily James.

Anyone But You - 22 December, 2023

American Fiction - 22 December, 2023

American Fiction is a comedy drama written and directed by Cord Jefferson based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett.  It was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute and was released in limited theatres a week ago before the expansion this week.

Official premise:

'Monk is a frustrated novelist who's fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish Black book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.'

American Fiction cast: Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Sterling K. Brown.

Migration - 22 December, 2023

The choice for the kids over the festive week is Migration, a new animation from Dreamworks.

However, their well-laid plans quickly go awry when they get lost and wind up in New York City. The experience soon inspires them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends, and accomplish more than they ever thought possible.'
