Respected British film critic Mark Kermode has defended Marvel and superhero movies against negative comments from Martin Scorsese.
Last year, the legendary filmmaker caused some controversy when he described Marvel movies as nothing but 'theme park rides'. Other famous directors like Quentin Tarantino and Francis Ford Coppola then made similar comments about the current superhero dominance over cinema.
Kermode, who is by no means a comic book movie champion, thinks Scorsese's comments were misguided, and thinks people should simply avoid going to see superhero movies rather than slating them.
“Some Marvel movies are great. Some Marvel movies are not great," he told Metro.
"It bothers me when filmmakers who should know better decide to announce the problem with cinema is ‘fairground ride’ movies. No, it isn’t. You don’t have to go and see superhero films. You could go and see films like (2023 awards darling) Past Lives.”
There is a phenomenon that some fans believe to have been developed called 'superhero fatigue' due to the sheer amount of content released in film and on television by Marvel and DC Comics.
What did Martin Scorsese say about Marvel movies?
Scorsese was asked by Empire what he thought about Marvel movies, and he responded:
“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks.
“It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
