Jon Favreau will direct the new Mandalorian and Grogu movie set in the Star Wars universe.
Three series of The Mandalorian have been produced so far, but it was recently announced that the story would continue next with a feature-length movie.
The series stars Pedro Pascal with Katee Sackhoff, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog, Omid Abtahi, Gona Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Amy Sedaris, Ming-Na Wen, Mercedes Varnado and Timothy Olyphant among the supporting cast.
Favreau created the series for Disney, and he will return as director for the new movie.
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," he said in a statement.
"The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
Favreau will act as a producer alongside Disney chief Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni, who is the new LucasFilm creative director.
“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen," Kennedy said after the announcement.
Dave Filoni is in charge of Star Wars
In November, Ahsoka director Filoni was announced for his new executive role, and told Vanity Fair:
"Now I’m what’s called chief creative officer of Lucasfilm. In the past, in a lot of projects I would be brought into, I would see it after it had already developed a good ways.
“In this new role, it’s opened up to basically everything that’s going on. When we’re planning the future of what we’re doing now, I’m involved at the inception phase.”
