Kevin Smith has praised James Gunn for how he has dealt with audience criticism following his appointment as new director of creative for DC Studios.

Gunn and Peter Safran were recently appointed in major roles at Warner Bros. to oversee DC Studios, with a massive shake-up in the vision of the DCEU and other properties expected.

The former will lead DC Studios from a creative standpoint, while Safran will focus on the business side of things.

The biggest decision that Gunn has made so far is to announce that Henry Cavill would not be reprising his role as Superman in any DC projects going forward, despite the character's return in Black Adam.

That generated plenty of criticism from fans, but Gunn has always kept an open dialogue about why decisions like that have to be made.

"I like how James is just being his own publicist for the entire DC/Warner Bros. division," Smith said on his Fatman Beyond podcast.

"Whatever it is. Like, it's smart. Everyone should be as accountable as he is. I know a lot of people are like, 'Ah, I don't like what he's doing!' But, at least he's answering questions. He's not hiding. And he's not being sh**** about it… He's like, 'Look, we're doing a thing.'

"And we're sorry if that hurts some people's feelings.' I respect that he's answering questions. He doesn't have to. How often does anybody over at Marvel go 'Alright, let's address the fans' concerns!' It doesn't really happen."

Gunn recently took to Twitter to rejection the suggestion that Jacob Elordi has already been cast as the new Clark Kent.

Cavill responds to Superman news

Cavill responded to the Superman news with humility and while he is saddened at not donning the cape again, he says he understands there must be a "changing of the guard" at some point.

“I just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it’s sad news, everyone,” Cavill posted on social media.

“I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.

"The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."
