Hollywood might have, sort of, got back going recently after writers returned to work after their strike, but no productions can fully continue until actors return.
Late last month, the Writers Guild of America announced that an agreement had been reached with AMPTP (The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) that would enable the writers in the union to receive residual payments from streaming shows instead of just broadcast shows, while also various protective measures against AI being used in the creative process.
SAG-AFTRA (The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) union members are still on strike, and negotiations have broken down again this week.
The AMPTP released a statement accusing SAG-AFTRA of extreme demands:
“Negotiations between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA have been suspended after SAG-AFTRA presented its most recent proposal on Oct. 11. After meaningful conversations, it is clear that the gap between the AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA is to great, and conversations are no longer moving us in a productive direction.”
The main reason for the breakdown was a request from SAG-AFTRA for a "viewership bonus" of $800 million per year — “which would create an untenable economic burden. SAG-AFTRA presented few, if any, moves on the numerous remaining open items.”
During the writer strike, CNBC reported that the highest-paid studio executive in Hollywood earns a staggering 384 times the salary of an average writer in Tinseltown.
Highest-paid Hollywood executives
Below is a list of the highest-paid studio executives in Hollywood between 2018 and 2022.
"The analysis notes that 2019 figures are not available for Endeavor, Joseph Ianniello left Paramount in 2020, and Disney chief Bob Iger left the company for most of 2022. More than 80% of CEO compensation is stock-related, according to the Economic Policy Institute, meaning total compensation could be lower depending on how their company performs in the stock market." CNBC reports.
