What Thor 5 NEEDS in order to work, according to Taika Waititi

Taika Waititi believes the only way for another Thor movie to work would be if it had the most formidable villain in the series so far.

Throughout the franchise, the villains in the first four movies were Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), Hela (Cate Blanchett) and Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale).

The last movie, Thor: Love and Thunder, did not receive as positive response from critics and fans as its predecessor, Thor: Ragnarok. At the moment, there are no concrete plans for a fifth movie, but director and writer Waititi reckons Thor needs to face a foe even greater than that of his sister, Hela.

"What is left to do to him? It's got to be something that feels like it's carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they're building on the obstacles that he has to overcome," he said in 'Thor: Love and Thunder' The Official Movie Special' book.

"I don't think we can have a villain that's weaker than Hela. I feel we need to step up from there and add a villain that's somehow more formidable."

Even though Love and Thunder received criticism for perhaps being a bit too goofy, Waititi insists the fun, fantastical element of Thor will continue.

"There's a fun element to (Thor) and he has a casualness and a sort of swagger about him when he visits these worlds and encounters these aliens that I don't think you'd get when it's an earthling travelling through space exploring the universe," he explained.

Would Hemsworth return as Thor?

Hemsworth is clearly very protective of the franchise and doesn't want to outstay his welcome as Thor if audiences are getting sick of the character.

 "I don't want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on screen as that character," the Australian told Entertainment Weekly.

"If an audience wants to see it, and if there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable."
