'In a dystopian future London where all social housing has been eliminated, Izi and Benji fight to navigate the world as residents of The Kitchen, a community that refuses to abandon their home.'
The Kitchen had its world premiere at the 67th BFI London Film Festival in October and has already received positive reviews from critics. It is scheduled for release on Netflix on 12 January.
Speaking to Empire, Kaluuya explained how London acts almost like a character in the movie.
“We wanted to make a seminal London film, so we looked at the seminal city films - Do The Right Thing, La Haine, The Prophet, This Is England," the Oscar winner explained.
"We were just inspired by it all, and wanted to build upon the amazing work that the people before us have done, and do our own version of it
“A lot of British films do minimalism. We do maximalism. Let’s dream big, think big, see big and see where we land, but still be real about what we are and where we’re at.”
Kaluuya never hides away from major topics in his work, most notably racism in Get Out. Here he touches on the rich-poor divide, a topic which is close to his heart after growing up in London.
