"Somewhere in this world there is one person you are destined to meet."
In 1870, Jeanne (Bujold) and her friend Francis (Huster) flee the Franco-Prussian War to America's wild west. The journey does not go smoothly, and soon Jeanne is left alone to care for her baby. Meanwhile, American vet Jimmy (Caan), a complete stranger to Jeanne, also has his problems (including the rape and murder of his wife). Eventually Jimmy and Jeanne meet and fall in love.
