This Savage Land plot

Widower Benjamin Pride heads west with his parents and children after the Civil War (Kansas) to be confronted by a gang of ex-Confederate soldiers commanded by Jud Barker, who set the area ablaze. Pride's mother is murdered in the process. When the smoke clears, he marries Elizabeth Reynolds, the daughter of the local doctor.
