"THE RAW UNTAMED ADVENTUROUS WEST...LIVES AGAIN!"

Itinerant Cole Hardin is accused of possessing a stolen horse, which turns out to be owned by 'Judge' Roy Bean's assistant Chickenfoot. The attractive farmer's daughter Jane Ellen Mathews disrupts Bean's court hearing. Bean nevertheless sentences Cole to the death penalty. Pretending to be a friend of famed actress Lily Langtree (whom Roy Bean adores), Cole escapes death and hides out in the countryside with the Mathews farming family. Cole unwittingly becomes involved in a battle between the ranchers, supported by Roy Bean, and the ranchers led by Caliphet Mathews.

Very successful western by William Wyler (at home in all markets) who refers to the historical struggles between herders and farmers, while striking a light-hearted tone through the seriousness.

Gary Cooper is the hero on duty, but it is Walter Brennan as the extravagant, corrupt judge who attracts the most attention anyway.

In the end, the film does not fail to underline, as usual, the generosity and generosity of the American.

Only my 2nd movie with Gary Cooper, after High Noon. A man who played more in western. It creates another style. The story revolves around Judge Roy Bean, who really existed. Admittedly, the story is rather romanticized, but as long as it makes for a good film, it doesn't matter to me. Bean is played by Walter Brennan and is one of the rare names to win 3 Oscars as an actor.

The big name, however, is Gary Gooper. His lonesome cowboy is different from what we are used to from, for example, Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Terence Hill and John Wayne. Morris is said to have partly inspired his Lucky Luke from this film. And I immediately thought of the comic book hero. Gary Cooper in Lucky Luke costume as a lonesome cowboy with a blade of grass in his mouth. The style is also recognizable in the comics.

The film starts quite light-hearted and there you especially notice the lack of color that is an added value with westerns and their beautiful landscapes. But later it gets a bit loose and the black and white is certainly not wrong. William Wyler, the man from Ben-Hur by the way, actually plays it safe and does not really do anything special, but he does deliver a good western. It is not the best film in the genre and Cooper is not immediately the best cowboy, but I imagine myself 130 years back, and that is also an achievement.

Separate but good western in which cold hard scenes are sometimes alternated with somewhat comical ones, which sometimes makes it a bit strange, but overall a good film with good acting from Brennan and also from Cooper.
