I'm a dying man, scared of the dark.

My 8th John Wayne. Special western that shows a vulnerable man who is terminally ill ("I have a cancer"). Main character John B Books is played by John Wayne, who also struggled with cancer for years in real life and would eventually succumb to it.

The story flows smoothly. Slowly you learn a little more about John Books' past, but more important are the relationships between the main characters and how he and others deal with John's approaching death. Meanwhile, John comes up with a plan on how to celebrate his last birthday...

Excellent film about an old gunfighter from the wild west who has only a short time to live. John Wayne is perfectly cast and here plays an older variation on all his previous western roles. And in that capacity, this last role is also a beautiful and worthy conclusion to his film career. The film itself cannot really be called a western and has a relaxed pace. Just 4.0 stars because of the beautiful ending.

Saying goodbye to John Wayne, even though it wasn't clear at the time. He had heart problems around the film, but only afterwards would he have to deal with cancer again and this would be his last film. He also brought James Stewart out of retirement, who had been retired for several years. Mainly due to hearing problems, Stewart didn't die until 1997! And with Lauren Bacall there is another great icon from the golden Hollywood period. You expect a very wooden film, but that is certainly not too bad. Bacall was far from finished (think Dogville later), Stewart does a pretty good job as an extended cameo and John Wayne plays one of his better roles. Especially because he (even though with the information about his illness that will be later) plays a role that is made for him. The farewell to his career as an actor, translated into the end of his career as a trigger-happy cowboy.

With the old icons and the matching story, this really has become a film with a heart in the right place. With a style that is reminiscent of the old days, but still manages to look far from outdated in 1976. This is the year of a whole different era with titles like Taxi Driver, Carrie, Marathon Man and Rocky.
