The Last Sunset plot

"When giants clash, a woman trembles!"

Wanted outlaw Brendan 'Ben' O'Malley flees to Mexico. Ben seeks shelter at the ranch of his childhood sweetheart Belle Breckenridge. Sheriff Dana Stribling is chasing Ben. Ben, meanwhile, has promised rancher and alcoholic John Breckenridge to escort his wife Belle and daughter Melissa and their employees to Texas with their herd of cattle. Dana joins the group, partly because he has no arrest warrant in Mexico and can keep an eye on Ben. On the way, John is killed in a cantina. Ben was already in love with Belle, but Dana will be too. Complications are inevitable and things get even more complicated when Melissa falls in love with Ben, who could be her father's age.

The ending was pretty telephoned, but nevertheless the only right ending, given the developments before it.

The film is fascinating because of the tensions between the four protagonists and the good performances of those four. The bandits, the Indians and the cattle herding are nice distractions. Very strange, but I thought there was something about those studio recordings... it looked very atmospheric, even though you know you are being fooled in a very ostentatious way.

Not the first western with a singing Douglas... I don't like it, but Douglas knows how to give even that kind of thing something extra so that it doesn't become annoying.

Hudson as an opponent worked very well. He plays a bit understated, allowing the extravagant Douglas to fully shine.

Good film about an outlaw who seeks shelter with a woman he once loved. The relationships between the characters are well developed, and this is where the tension of the film lies mainly. The good cast certainly contributes to this. Like most Hollywood westerns from that era, this one looks great.

I enjoyed this film, it's quite simple and comical for an old cowboy western film, the twist towards the end of the film was hilarious, somehow I just saw it coming and it didn't bother me.

Douglas trying to intimidate just doesn't work with his body it comes across as quite strange, and at the same time with the clothes he was wearing a bit gay-ish, not sure the right word dandy maybe?, maybe that worked in that period or when that film was made. but not really now.
