New Mexico Governor L. Bradford Price sends Sunset Carson to the town of Tres Piños, near the border with Mexico, to investigate a gang of smugglers that is giving border police a lot of work. The journalist Ann Morton works incognito in the saloon of Tres Piños. She is waiting for developments around the smugglers to write a story about it. By posing as wanted outlaw Brazos Kane, Sunset joins the gang. But then Ann discovers Sunset's true identity and purpose of his assignment...
