'Maybe' Smith becomes involved in the daily lives of several intimidated townspeople, who suffer from the despotic excesses of the powerful Corley rancher family. Pinch Corley is the meanest member of this family. Saloon owner Fran Dare's father was murdered by Pinch. Ultimately, it comes to a confrontation between 'Maybe' and Pinch, partly because Sheriff Jim Jackson keeps aloof from the problems in his town. 'Maybe' and Pinch are faced with the choice of fighting with the fist, hand to hand, or with the rifle, but perhaps there is no choice.
