Finally finished watching this with difficulty (I kept falling asleep during it this week).

This Johnny Oro, or as I have him "Ringo mit den goldenen Pistolen", is a nice, but not really special Spaghetti western, yet I often come across it in lists and top so-and-so of the best Spaghetti westerns and I wonder where that fame comes from?
Could it be that the name of director Corbucci is the only reason? It is clear that he later delivered much better work with Django, Il Mercenario and Vamos a Matar, Companeros.

Damon in the lead role is good and has enough charisma to carry the film, although - and I repeat myself with every film in which he plays the good guy - I would have preferred to see him as a villain, as he has much more the looks for that, see his role in Requiescant from 1967 as a good example.

Furthermore, he is surrounded by a host of B-actors, who always seem to populate these kinds of films and who at most deliver decent work but never really excel.

Serious scenes alternate with cheesy and funny (intended) scenes. For example, there is a scene in a saloon where Damon asks for a glass of water. Then he gets the water thrown in his face. He reacts very calmly and orders a glass of whiskey, to which he adds all sorts of things, such as tomato ketchup, mustard and tobacco. The experienced viewer already suspects where this scene will end and is rewarded.

The film also contains a number of fight scenes reminiscent of the later Spencer/Hill films.

Reasonably atmospheric score with a recurring main theme by composer Carlo Savina.

Not a high flyer, but entertaining.
A solid six, or three stars.
