Jesse James was unlucky enough to have been released in the same year as those other two giants in Technicolor: Gone With The Wind and The Wizard of Oz .

Quite entertaining western, since the tone mainly speaks in favor of Jesse James. Who else can you have but Tyrone Power?

Fortunately, the film does have some strong scenes, such as the anticipation of Frank James' rescue. This is played out superbly, in a classic way.

A worthy replacement for the lack of an elaborate bank robbery.

The scene in which they dive into the ravine on horseback is also impressive. I read that they had blindfolded the horses for this and they did not survive in the end. This resulted in the introduction of a bond, which subsequently ensured that 'no animals were hurt during the production of this motion picture.'

A delightful "old-fashioned" Western full of momentum and energy, in which the historical accuracy (such as the absence of Quantrill's Raiders and the Younger Boys, not to mention the "They was drove to it" angle) has been traded for the charisma of Tyrone Power (although opinions may differ on that) and Henry Fonda (who would later become a bigger star and a better actor than Power, of course, but still plays second fiddle here). Surprising also that there is hardly any background music, not even during the chase after the prison break and after the botched bank robbery. Action, humor (all those editorials of the major!), romance, a good villain (Brian Donlevy), a beautiful conniving Bob Ford (the immortal John Carradine), nice psychological development (life as " scared animals" on the flight of Jesse and Zee is by no means idealized) and the occasional beautiful camera work (Jesse walking over the roofs of the moving train's carriages at night!) make this a party. Superb entertainment in the best classic Hollywood tradition.
Incidentally, 1939 was a good year for westerns anyway, because in addition to this film, Destry rides again, John Fords Drums along the Mohawk, and the central western classic saw the light of day. who ushered in the great years of the American Western, Stagecoach. (But, to be fair, that year also saw the release of The Oklahoma Kid, featuring two archetypal gangsters who suddenly don a cowboy outfit – James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart, the former of whom even exists to survive a successful shot blowing the smoke from the barrel of his revolver.)

Henry King's Jesse James is one of the classics of the top year of the western, but certainly not the best of that year. This film adaptation of the life of one of the most notorious outlaws of the old American west is, however, a very entertaining one. This is mainly due to the strong performances of Tyrone Power and Henry Fonda as the prominent James brothers, and the witty contribution of Henry Hull. In addition, it is the romance, which Nancy Kelly provides in a very nice way, and the commotion brought by Brian Donlevy, Donald Meek and John Carradine, that give this fine western a nice atmosphere.
