Quite outdated. A film with a light tone in which the comically intended elements certainly do not seem to belong in terms of tone and that bit of romance has nothing to do with it at all. Furthermore, typical film on one such location with all kinds of acquaintances of each other (in this case soldiers), which quickly makes it a cozy whole. That also looks pretty good for the first hour, although I couldn't discover anything special there. After that the film starts to get tedious, partly due to the somewhat wooden acting and the few special images (Monument Valley alone is not enough John Ford!). The last half hour is a bit better and with those almost luminous clouds also visually a bit nicer, but as a whole it is a bit dull and dozed off. 2.5*.

Technically almost perfect and great acting in a masterclass Ford regulars. Wayne in particular shows that he can really act (and not just survive on charisma). Not inferior to tour de force Fonda in this film. The story lags behind and that makes me doubt between 3.5 and 4. Ford is the ultimate craftsman by the way.

Have had the DVD for a while but only saw the movie yesterday. I have to say that I am a fan of westerns anyway. Fort Apache is from 1948 and that means that John Ford takes the time to tell the story. Many young people will therefore not find the film flashy and possibly boring. I think it's a great movie. It's also nice how John Ford takes the time to paint a picture of life inside a fort. The acting performances are fine, including Shirley Temple, then 20, but already past her peak of film career.

The action scenes are, especially for that time, spectacularly filmed.

In short, an excellent film; 4****s from me.
