Westerplatte plot
The Westerplatte in Gdansk, a Polish weapons storage depot, was the first obstacle during Hitler's advance in Europe. An infantry company and civilians, together 182 men, with few weapons, have to face the German army. Yet they manage to hold out for seven days. The first shots of the Second World War are exchanged here.

Agree with joolstein, impressive film, well made, with competent camera work, solid acting and no exaggerated heroism. However, with these kinds of films about battles I always have the problem that I miss the overview of the fighting actions, which those directly involved apparently do have. I also often find it difficult to place all those involved and to distinguish between them. What makes this film strong, is showing how the initial fighting spirit and optimism makes way for despair and resignation due to lack of sleep, exhaustion and lack of ammunition, and of course the German superiority. In the end the Germans are even surprised that the Poles have surrendered, because in fact they were not defeated.
