War reporter Ernie Pyle teams up with an infantry battalion traveling through Italy during WWII. He befriends some soldiers, including the heroic commander. The film tells of the everyday affairs that preoccupy them, such as one of the soldiers who desperately tries to find a way to listen to a tape recording of his son and the commander who is rather indifferent about his medals.
