Nice film about the last days of the famous warlord.

A while ago I saw what is probably the latest remake of this example: Rommel (2012), and felt mainly annoyed about the lack of depth, too easily justifying what must really have been crooked, being too much the pleasant old uncle of Ulrich Tukur. That is all marginally better in this film.

Yet the same problem is actually quite annoyingly present in this film. The cult of personality surrounding Rommel apparently makes it impossible to make a decent film about the man, to offer a semblance of depth in the treatment of his life story. As in the remake, this film also takes the easy way out by focusing mainly on the twilight years, and not on the cause of the best man's world fame.

It's not all doom and gloom. At least this film is populated by a number of actors who exude something soldierly. However, it will never be as heroic as James Mason is on the poster. And ah, Luther Adler - well. Something in me says you can't blame an actor for being a bad Hitler.

With a documentary slant, especially in the first part.

Particularly interesting for Rommel's attitude towards the Führer, when the chances of a German victory began to shrink sharply.

Pretty exciting towards the end.

James Mason could also handle that role.
