Pastorale 1943 plot

Film adaptation of Simon Vestdijk's novel of the same name in which a group of citizens from a village in the Betuwe perform brave deeds in the resistance during the Second World War. The betrayal of people in hiding on a farm makes five men decide to liquidate the local NSB grocer. This turns out to be more difficult than expected.

As previously reported here, the version on the DVD of Pastorale 1943 is not good. The acting is a bit clumsy here and there and that is distracting in this film. The story based on Vestdijk's book is well put together. I thought the second half of the film was a lot stronger, also with a short appearance by Hauer. That scene really stands out. All in all, quite a decent war film.

In the 1970s there were not many very good films made in the Netherlands. They were often play-like performances with lousy acting. In that sense, this film is certainly not too bad. Although there are also cringe-worthy acting scenes here. But not by everyone. Furthermore, many films about the war were made at that time. And of course this is also part of that. A film about people in the resistance. There are a lot of famous names in the film and actors who would go on to make it.

Unfortunately, the story is not very balanced and is somewhat unlikely and chaotic here and there, although the overall picture is easy to follow and the film is not boring. But you often see actors who seem to have an important role, but who you never see again or who are hardly even mentioned anymore. Rutger Hauer also makes an appearance in the last scene. But he is the only German in the film who simply speaks Dutch without an accent. Just like his brother, by the way, but at least he still lives in the Netherlands.

The next step in the war week was this Pastorale '43 and therefore a completely unknown film to me. So just play with this oldie was the motto.

The story is actually quite simple in advance with a generally supported resistance group that gets into trouble with the local NSB member and grocer who they then want to crush. Not surprising and the film doesn't need much of a lead-up before the robbery, for which everything is done, quickly takes place. What is striking is the beautiful, authentic atmosphere and the many familiar faces within the cast.

But then the great search begins, which is actually the tone of the film, which regularly tends towards the bland and feels like a farce, like joke. Then there is a considerable interlude that is used for the people in hiding, many characters pass by such as Schults, Van Dale and the attempts to lure the two into a trap, and that is quite separate from the actual situation between Poerstamper and Mertens and his receipts office. The film feels too long and can be blamed for a script in which one wanders too much or one must want an image in which no one is who he seems and both friend and enemy are close by.

Pastorale '43 can be called okay for once and gets a passing grade, but that says a lot.
