A special film insofar as it has a fairly long run-up without significant events. The biggest drama is that a few say something nasty about Brown's skin color, but those are also quarrels in the margins. No big drama, no real conflicts. The film takes an hour and a half, which is really too long, towards the finale with some Korean War action. I also don't know what this film should be: a portrait of the first black pilot, of the war itself, of a group of airmen with a black pilot by chance? Although the decoration is fine (although a bit too clean and with too much retro look), the film is always just not quite right. And then 140 minutes are allotted for it. Another factor is that Majors' interpretation of Brown as a person is rather flat and the parts in which he fights with demons are not convincing for a moment and even become a bit laughable. His wife (in the last scene especially) and wingman Glenn Powell do a lot more impressive in that respect. Undoubtedly a film that gambles on the Oscars with its theme, but is too weak as a drama and also gets unexpected competition (in the field of Oscars) from that other pilot film Top Gun this year. That's not going to be him. The director on duty occasionally has a nice visual idea with a good execution (also in the editing) but that's it. 2.5*.

Devotion is above all the film adaptation of a story that should not be forgotten. The biography of Jesse Brown who has dealt with racism all his life and faced so much more headwind as he worked his way up to become the first black pilot in the Air Force during the Korean War. The comparison with the Top Gun sequel earlier this year is quickly made with the planes. Devotion has more charm and a more interesting story. Although the course is quite predictable. But beautifully filmed with a heart. It never really excels, but you will definitely enjoy this for 2 hours in the cinema.

A bit old-fashioned and tame true war drama, but otherwise not very wrong. The decent cast makes up for a lot, just like the neat visual effects. Some spectacular action scenes here and there. The pace could have been a little faster.
