Despite the star cast, a somewhat disappointing film. The story was well thought out, but it didn't get really interesting or exciting anywhere and you expect the latter in a thriller with such a cast. The duration of the film is also not really easy because it is quite a long sitting and there are many boring moments in it. The images of Russia looked quite nice, by the way. Of the cast, Sean Connery, Klaus Maria Brandauer and Roy Scheider did quite well. Michelle Pfeiffer was of course the beauty of the film and she did a nice job too, but I thought her Russian accent was a bit over the top.

The Russia House has become a boring movie. Too bad, because Sean Connery, among others, was not bad here. A somewhat atypical role for him. Michelle Pfeiffer plays a bland sparrow. Not many memorable characters. Klaus Maria Brandauer was not too bad, but has already done better. The film is just way too long and the elevator music soundtrack simply puts the viewer in a daze. A director of band work. Because apart from some beautiful Russian spots, it's never really worth it. And even those beautiful places could have been even better. The Russia House has become a glorified TV movie with a slightly more famous cast.

Yes, I thought it was dull and boring, despite the film being well received by film critics at the time. You really have to like rippling spy movies to sit this one out. There are also positive things to say. It's not the classic spy movie West versus Russia. This is played in a context of rapprochement for the sake of peace, which gave the film a fresh touch. The Russia House is also remembered for having been shot in Russia itself. It enhanced the atmosphere and provided an impressive backdrop to the intrigue. What annoyed me was the unbelievable romance between old Barley and Katya thirty years her junior. Why did they not choose an older actress such as Charlotte Rampling or Jane Fonda? The choice for Pfeiffer makes no sense. One of the lesser Le Carré stories and film adaptations.
