Like John McTiernan with Die hard, Roger Donaldson made a film at the beginning of his career with No way out (1987) that I like so much that I'm ( Donaldson) have been following ever since. Of course, not all of his later films are of the same standard, but he never delivered any real junk, and that also applies to The November man. A nice complex plot with a paranoid twist, a beautiful woman, a young dog as opponent, strong performances, a few explosions, and Pierce Brosnan who takes out countless villains with the greatest of ease without blinking. Forgotten tomorrow, but well entertained today. Nice to see Will Patton again : in the aforementioned No way out he stole the show as the shrewd assistant of hunted minister Gene Hackman, and before you get to see him you recognize him in The November man is already in his separate diction.

In 2008, Peter Devereaux [Pierce Brosnan] ended his career with the CIA after his ward David Mason [Luke Bracey] accidentally shot and killed a child during a security operation. Five years later, in Lausanne, they come face to face again, but this time as opponents. Peter manages to escape and tries to find out why and by whom his operation was betrayed. And who actually is his enemy. Old-fashioned spy thriller with a far-fetched plot, but Donaldson makes sure you never have time to think too much about it and Brosnan's notable charisma (in James Bond mode) makes this an entertaining, but not-too-memorable addition to the genre.
