Since the death of her alcoholic husband Jeremy (Tim Roth), Kathy MacFarlane (Andie MacDowell) tries to get back together with her two daughters and her teenage son. She struggles with financial problems and partly for that reason she rents out the old practice house to the French engineer Marc. She goes back to work, but all this distraction doesn't provide the rest Kathy desperately needs. That's not so strange, because since Jeremy's death strange things have been happening in and around the house. Keys disappear and inexplicably reappear, she gets a call every night at exactly a quarter past twelve without anyone on the line and the number 8, their number, shows up in all kinds of places. These strange occurrences become visual when Kathy sees her late husband popping up everywhere, especially in places where alcohol can be consumed. Her new friend from work has an explanation for what's happening. This Dora herself has experience with what happens to Kathy and she is convinced that there are unfinished business between Kathy and Jeremy that must be resolved.
