Not a surprising or exciting film. You could even call him well-behaved. Or as unimaginative. Or as uninspired. The film, which is vaguely reminiscent of “The Shining”, but in its execution is no more than a terrible surrogate version stripped of all frills, is a flat and unlayered monstrosity. Atmosphereless too.

No gore or explicit kills or scary scares. And those things are not necessarily necessary, of course, but if those things are missing, then the spherical elements must at least have an impact. And for a film that relies on a sinister and creepy atmosphere, “The Charnel House” is quite lacking in atmosphere.

It's not even that there isn't an attempt to create a creepy atmosphere. On the contrary. With lighting effects, with actors looking anxious and disturbed and with a scary plot, that attempt is certainly there. Unfortunately it doesn't work at all. It's simply too simple. Too imposed creepy. The truly terrifying atmosphere just won't come. So no tension. So no thrills. It just remains a flat, tasteless snack.

It didn't make me feel hot or cold.

This was also recorded and therefore also watched. Hm, it wasn't a bad movie, but it's certainly not a must-see. The film never really gets exciting. There was one nice murder in it, but the rest was not so good. Fortunately the cast didn't do too badly.

Not all that special.

The popular perception is that most parody films are pretty easy fare for the average director and Craig Moss is certainly no stranger to that subgenre. The fact that someone like him then makes off with a more serious horror film is not exactly reassuring and it soon became clear that The Charnel House would offer few uplifting images. The atmosphereless and bare directing in particular makes the whole thing barely interesting to sit through. Conceptually, on the other hand, it still has a certain potential. In this case, an apartment with a runaway AI. Not an innovative feature, but always fun to watch. What's confusing is that Moss cuts this off after about 45 minutes and decides to move on to ghosts taking on shapes. While the first half was not very interesting at the time, the second half completely descends into boring scenes. Some of the supporting characters act remarkably well and both the opening and the end are quite nice, but almost the entire content of this unedifying horror thriller is completely forgotten after a relatively short period.
