Mediocre thriller. The story is not very original and is a bit of a simple variant of Memento. That actually makes it a hopeless mission because you keep comparing that masterpiece with this film. The film continues on quietly without being boring and as a viewer you keep wondering what exactly happened. Towards the end it becomes unnecessarily complex and it doesn't really interest you anymore. The acting is otherwise okay. Visually reasonably done. 3.0

What a horribly bad movie, Crowe notwithstanding. I'm clearly not the only one who feels this way when I look at most of the reviews on the internet. Annoying long-winded movie...

After years of binge drinking, retired police officer Roy Freeman [Russell Crowe] has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Now he is participating in a medical experiment with a drug that may be able to restore the broken connections in his brain (and thus his memory). Then he is approached through an interest group for detainees for a conversation with Isaac Samuel [Pacharo Mzembe], who, thanks to Roy, confessed 10 years ago to being responsible for the death of Dr. Joseph Wieder [Maron Csokas] and will soon be executed. Isaac claims his innocence and begs Roy to reconsider the case. Because Roy has been advised to stimulate his brain as much as possible, he throws himself into the case and contacts his then partner Jimmy [Tommy Flanagan]. An interesting frame story for a film noir with Laura Baines [Karen Gillan] as the potential femme fatale. Stylishly filmed and entertaining, but the outcome did not come as a surprise to me.
