Modelo 77 plot
Barcelona, 1977. Manuel, a young accountant, is in prison for embezzling money and awaits trial. Hanging over his head is a possible sentence of six to eight years, an unfair punishment for the crime committed. Soon Manuel and his cellmate Pino join a prisoner collective fighting for the rights of ordinary prisoners and amnesty. A war for freedom begins that will shake the Spanish prison system.

A dark chapter from the final days of the Franco regime. The prisons continued to apply the same repressive methods, which caused bad blood among the prisoners who demanded more rights, participation and justice. People were then sentenced to excessive prison sentences for the smallest offenses, for example six to eight years in prison for a minor theft. The film chronicles the organized uprisings against these abuses with the aim of escalating them to the political level. An excellent raw prison drama that is told very smoothly and finds a good balance between the historical background and hard jailhouse action moments. The guards and the prison system do not get a vote; everything is seen from the prisoners' point of view. Modelo 77 received 5 Goyas in smaller categories and had to give the thumbs up to The Beasts.
