Reasonably successful thriller/horror film from our own country. The first half is the strongest. The tension is slowly built up with sometimes very exciting moments. The second half is somewhat less and the film lapses into a somewhat weak horror variant which is at the expense of the tension. Schreurs acts reasonably and can almost carry the entire film by himself. The atmosphere and decoration are fine with a good soundtrack. 3.5

Not good.

And that's a shame, because Kristen is actually one of those films that you would like to see. Video store owner loses his job and starts making films himself with an ultra-low budget. Weistra uses that freedom to give an original twist to his genre film, something that is possible because if he can convince one and a half men and a horse's head, he will already have covered the costs.

There is no shortage of ideas. Admittedly, Kristen is a film that often resembles other horror films (no surprise that Weistra saw Insidious while writing the script), but the combination of elements plus the somewhat idiosyncratic ending make Kristen quite an original work. He may overdo it a bit with the bad guy, but that is forgiven.

Only ... genre work is all about execution and that is really below par. Terrible acting, poor camera work, the voice work of Top ... certainly the latter is also an annoying sore point. What a lousy voice for what should be a frightening bad guy. But Weistra also fails to capture that tension. The final showdown also looks more ridiculous than scary, the editing is not good enough, the soundtrack sounds somewhat amateurish. It simply feels too often like soulless and somewhat amateurish imitation.

Too bad, because he is a man with interesting ideas. Only directing is not his thing.

1.5*

Entertaining genre film with a rather old-fashioned execution. It is truly astonishing that no one approached director Mark Weistra during production with the remark that the dialogues were among the worst written ever. Of course, no one can act well with this script, which is why Terence Schreurs (despite his best efforts) is lured into a trap with miserable texts. Fortunately, this is offset by a story with a short run-up, enough experimentation on a visual level and a reasonable tension arc. Kristen is never particularly nerve-wracking, but as a viewer you are captivated by the progression of the story. After a while it becomes clear that Weistra is explicitly looking for originality and from that moment on the film begins to falter, but the running time is short enough to prevent the event from lapsing into boredom. Ronald Top is not exactly intimidating as "The Voice".
