First of all, I don't know anything about the original anime, but as Wingard himself pointed out, this isn't a remake of the original. To put it in his words: "[i]For us, this felt like an opportunity to take something that was familiar and to do something new with it. ... [And] because we were taking something that is very Japanese and moving it over to a different country, we realized that not only were there changes that needed to be made, but ultimately, it was a chance to take a new approach to something that you have seen before. i]"

Of course I had seen the trailer beforehand and I immediately saw this is going to be something special and it was. Tightly directed with a mix of genres. Thriller, horror (there is definitely a good jumpscare in it and also some gore), mystery, fantasy and even drama. I love it!

The twists, the style, the tight direction and above all the alternative, but awesome soundtrack complete this film. Another wonderful sublime inspiration: Drive slowly, drive safe as a poster at a bus shelter and 'L' just rams it over with his police car
Maybe a little less than The Guest but here too I got goosebumps when they were dangling from that Ferris wheel, wow. plus the story was just very well put together.

Good film, never boring and well put together. Don't get the ratings here at all, this is one of the best horror suspense thrillers I've seen and there are a lot of them.

8.5/10 I'll just round up a bit to positively influence the rating because this masterpiece deserves that

Top shelf teen pulp!
joolstein The film is loosely based on the Japanese manga of the same name. I have no idea what that is like, since I only watch movies and almost no series. But I think if you're a big fan of the manga and/or anime, I don't really recommend this movie.
This also applies to me, I even went into it completely blind without watching or reading the trailer, story or whatever. So a very neutral take on this film.
I've had its Asian predecessor on the shelf here for a long time and still haven't seen it. Is it better, only time will tell. Of course the original has an edge, but because I saw this film first, this film is very refreshing for me.
The pace was quite high and I didn't find a negative point. It was all very clear to follow. The kills were well thought out and the story is quite well put together for the genre. Willem Dafoe plays Ryuk in which his voice gives added value to his mysterious character. The rest of the cast didn't bore me despite the critical acclaim. I even thought that girl played a decent role as a selfish self-assured bitch.

And then the music, well...I also liked this concept. The final scene at the Ferris wheel is great and afterwards the viewer gets an overview of the events on site. And then that very last scene in the hospital..... lovely laugh from Ryuk.
Conclusion: something completely different, high tempo, a lot of developments, nice kills, fascinating plot, Ryuk and a nice successful ending. Earned 8/10
